Open File Formats

Standard files for your NLE

Unlike traditional cameras that record obscure file formats that take time to convert before you can start post production, the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K records directly to files that are compatible with your editing software. The wide dynamic range of the Super 35 size sensor can be mapped into the quantizing range of the file, so you can color grade shots with greater detail in highlights and shadows. If you're working fast, simply select 'Video' and shoot in regular REC709 color space.

You can even set shot number and other data to increment automatically! This metadata saves directly into your files and is compatible with popular editing software. With 12 stops of dynamic range you get amazing looking images beyond those of regular video cameras or even the highest end broadcast cameras. All this dynamic range is captured into ProRes or CinemaDNG files at 4K resolution, so images retain a

It includes a 6G-SDI connection for Ultra HD resolution or down converted HD output over a single SDI cable. The built in Thunderbolt connection lets you plug into a laptop computer and use the included UltraScope software for real time waveform monitoring. There are 1/4” jack mic/line inputs for recording the highest quality uncompressed audio, plus a 12V to 30V DC input, a 3.5mm headphone input socket and LANC remote control!

Blackmagic Production Camera 4K uses standard connections that are conveniently located on one side of the camera. All connections are protected by rubber hoods to keep them clean from dust and dirt when not in use. With standard connections you never need to buy custom cables and if you forget to take a cable with you it’s easy to source a replacement. The camera includes a Thunderbolt connection so you can connect to a computer and use the included UltraScope software for on set scopes!

Many cameras are designed to use proprietary storage media and file formats, which can both increase your storage costs and slow down the post production process. The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K features a built in SSD recorder for removable disks. These standard 2.5” solid state drives are fast, readily available from computer stores and constantly reducing in cost. Because the camera’s video and audio capture is synchronized within the ProRes 422 (HQ) file you can take files easily into post production.

 

Flexible Power Options

Wide 12V to 30V DC input plus a built in battery!

Power

The inclusion of an internal rechargeable battery makes the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K a truly portable high resolution camera. You get up to 90 minutes of recording time from the battery and the remaining power information is shown in the data strip at the bottom of the picture. The wide input voltage of 12-30V means you can connect external professional battery packs that will let you operate the camera longer whilst recharging the internal battery at the same time.

Many production cameras record proprietary file formats which need to be transcoded before you can start post production. By recording to ProRes and CinemaDNG your files work with popular video software. These open file formats maintain the full dynamic range recorded by the camera’s sensor and

create files that are perfect for post production. You can even use Final Cut Pro X to edit the native Ultra HD files and color correct with DaVinci Resolve, maintaining a 4K workflow throughout post production.

Capture the world in RAW and get all the range of the image

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K lets you shoot in either Film or Video mode to suit your needs. In Film mode the full dynamic range from the camera’s image sensor is recorded, so that with color correction you have the maximum information in the highlights and shadows of the images. When you shoot in

Video mode the camera processes the images within the Rec709 color space that is a standard for HDTV. Video mode is perfect in situations where you need to deliver a project quickly that does not require color correction.

With a built in SSD recorder you get fast, reliable and low cost storage of your recorded files. An SSD has no mechanical moving parts, which reduces the risk of it being damaged during use. SSD technology has proven reliability and the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K uses the same 2.5” disks that are used in laptop and workstation computers. Metadata

Enter metadata on the camera directly!

With so many digital assets in creative production, metadata management is essential. Metadata tags can be applied to files following their creation but this process in itself can be extremely time consuming. The Blackmagic Production 4K camera lets you enter metadata during the shooting process, which gets written to the file. By entering keywords, comments or simply marking a file as a favorite you can save hours when trying to find this file during post production. Metadata is written using standard protocols so it can be read by lots of different video software applications.

Blazing Fast Thunderbolt™

Connect to a computer for real time scopes on set

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K includes a Thunderbolt connection built into the camera. Advanced Thunderbolt technology provides an incredibly fast 10 Gb/s computer connection so you can capture the camera’s output. You can also use the Thunderbolt video output with the included Blackmagic UltraScope software and get technically accurate waveform monitoring, even when using a laptop on set.

Amazing 6G-SDI

6G-SDI is 4 times faster than HD-SDI and sets new standards for SDI connectivity. Previously you required 4 separate SDI connections for Ultra HD, whereas now you can output Ultra HD over a single cable. 6G-SDI is the next generation of SDI connectivity and is already available across Blackmagic Design’s range of Ultra HD 4K solutions.

Professional Audio Recording

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K includes analog audio connections using 1/4” jacks. By including analog audio connections you can use external directional and ambient microphones for effects and commentary to suit your audio requirements. All audio is written to the ProRes file, so is fully synchronized with your footage.

Remote Control

The LANC protocol is a standard method for the remote control of professional cameras. Blackmagic Production Camera 4K features a standard 2.5mm jack for connecting to a remote that lets you trigger the camera to start and stop recording, plus it supports electronic lens control of the focus and iris, all using an industry standard protocol and jack connection.
